Rider Issues
I’ve started using Rider a lot more than I do Visual Studio, I’m lucky in that I currently have both available. I still use both which partly depends on what I am doing but my go to ide is now Rider. It’s no suprise that there are some issues. Most of the issues I have are too small to worry about.
This morning however, I got a new issue. This was my first biggie with Rider. The IDE wouldn’t startup and just reported an error
IDE shows the Start Failed dialog with the exception stacktrace and the following text:Internal error. Please report to https://jb.gg/ide/critical-startup-errors
Restarting Rider didn’t help, so I took this as an opportunity to try out their support. Going to the link above led me to Revise IDE folders locking mechanism (don’t fail startup if all ports in range are taken) : IDEA-238995 (jetbrains.com) and I tried the workaround. I had to do the second part too but overall it was a very pleasant experience. Maybe I was lucky but this is a good start, basically with minimal effort I have the system back up and running.
Repeat Issue
I’ve just had a similar issue (October 2021). This was shortly after an enforced windows update which seems to have caused mayhem so that is the chief suspect. This is a bit frustrating as I delay the windows updates as long as possible. Maybe I shouldn’t as there is nothing more secure than a machine that you can’t use.
When I opened Rider the splash screen came up and the dialog boxes showed e.g. if I exited but I couldn’t see the IDE other than on the task bar. Other Jetbrains apps worked fine so I reinstalled but that didn’t help. When I hover over Rider on the task bar it just shows a white screen. I eventually got it working, more by good luck than good judgement. I discovered that if I right clicked on the task bar and opened a different solution that the IDE for the first solution showed up (but the other stayed white when hovered over) and that it largely appeared to be working. I then closed the white window and used File and Exit on the IDE window. So far that appears to have resolved this issue, however I did log a call with Jetbrains support — who are fantastic — they asked for some logs and I’m sure they will spot any underlying issues, so I’m waiting to hear back from them
